Everyone knows that, generally, the more exercise you do, the healthier and fitter you will be.
Exercise and fitness training can come in all manner of forms, from weightlifting and muscle workout to cardio training and competitive sports participation.
One of the most popular, and easiest, methods of exercise, especially for the older generations, is DIY. DIY is probably the single most practical form of light exercise you can perform, not only because it keeps you active, but you are also completing household tasks that need doing.
Take wallpapering for example.
There is a lot of effort that goes into wallpapering before you even open the roll of paper.
First you need to strip the old paper, which can be a difficult task if you are doing it by hand and the small bits of the wallpaper decide to continue to cling on to the wall. When you try a bit harder to pull the paper off the wall it might come off with some of the wall facing, leaving a nasty-looking hole in the wall.
To fix this, you need to sand down the wall and cover in the gaps with filler, before sanding again to ensure a nice and smooth wall to start wallpapering on.
So far, you will have already have gone around the room twice, up and down ladders, pulling, scraping, sanding and smoothing just in preparation for getting the room decorated.
When it finally comes to putting up your wallpaper, there is still more physical work to do, including:
- Measuring and cutting strips of paper
- Pasting the paper or wall
- Climbing up step-ladders to hang the paper
- Aligning and adjusting the wallpaper
- Final cuts at the top and bottom for a perfect fit
Repeat this for every single strip of wallpaper that you have to hang and you will have accumulated a high number of steps around the room and up and down the step ladder, repetitive movement back and forth with your arms and hand while pasting and constant bending down and reaching up to difficult places to reach.
When you’ve finished a wallpapering job and the room is finally complete, you will feel two things.
First, an overwhelming sense of relief and pleasure that your DIY job is complete and has been a resounding success, and the room looks infinitely times better than what it was before.
And secondly, that you are completely exhausted from the constant moving and stretching you have been doing, working muscle groups you didn’t know existed, and you’re ready to stick the kettle on, put your feet up and enjoy the surroundings of your new room.
