You would think choosing wallpaper would be easy. Pick a colour and pattern you like, put it up – and voilà it looks fantastic…just as you hoped, or does it?
Actually, choosing the right wallpaper can be tricky at times with so much to choose from these days. And often, the more designs, colour and textures you look at, the more confusing it can be.
Decorating, whether it be painting or wallpapering, is time consuming when you consider the inevitable preparation work, the moving of furnishings and fittings, disruption, your precious time, and of course the financial expense – so its important you get things right from the start. And if you end up choosing the wrong wallpaper: it’s never going to meet your expectations, all your efforts will have been in vain.
By following a few simple tips when choosing your wallpaper, you can avoid a lot of disappointment with the finished room. After having smoothed out that last strip of wallpaper you want to be able to stand back and admire a job well done…not think “it’s not quite how I expected it to look, but it will do for now”
Wallpaper is a great choice for any room in the home – it allows you to bring, colour, texture and design all in one wall covering- but you need to choose the right wallpaper if you’re to create the desired effect.
Whatever your preference - textured, traditional/contemporary, eye catching bold statement patterns, or gentler, subtle toned designs and shades, remember your choice needs to sit along side everything else in the room – mix and match is good, contrast and blend also, but avoid clashing style and colour.
Keep in mind that different types of wallpaper create different visual effects. Large, bold patterns tend to make a room appear smaller than it actually is – but can work great in bigger rooms. Some bold, statement wallpapers are better when kept to only one or two walls, with a contrasting pattern or colour on the others.
Spend a little time choosing the right wallpaper – make a shortlist of a few favourites and consider these alongside your overall design theme; furnishings, window and floor coverings. You don’t want second thoughts once you’ve started. In smaller rooms - bedrooms perhaps – small patterns work well. In children’s bedrooms choose feature wallpaper from one of the hundreds in the children’s range.
For larger rooms such as dining areas, living rooms, or hall ways, consider hanging vertical striped fashion wallpaper as it helps create the effect of height and space. Horizontal stripes on the other hand make a ceiling appear lower, cosier. Lighter coloured wallpaper can make a room appear more spacious, lighter and brighter - darker shades tend to make a room appear smaller.
